WSSC - Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, MD

WSSC - GIS Re-Engineering Study "Data Review" is to illustrate the current state of the data being used as part of the WSSC GIS Enterprise Environment. This includes data managed at both corporate and departmental levels. This phase of the project will provide necessary information and data examples with regard to data types, use and formats to support the final gap analysis and the creation of recommended actions to improve and optimize the GIS.

The review processes undertaken by the HMM and A. Morton Thomas Team required the most specific inventory and compilation. While Business Process and Information Systems Reviews were organized along departmental lines, this review, while specifically noting the owner / maintainer of the data sets, has been organized based on the data sources themselves. This has been done, in part due to the fact most data sets are used by more than one business unit and in many cases editing of key GIS and related datasets are confined to a few central groups that then disseminate this data for larger departmental use. Further, specific departmental use is listed in the "Task 3 Information Systems Review" Technical Memorandum.

In the case of this review process, the task sets out to collect, assemble, catalog, and review relevant water and wastewater data sources. Each data source has been researched by the HMM team, with supporting examples obtained to better illustrate current condition and use. The information reviewed and gathered has been presented based on a series of categories that provide insight into data types, use, owner and maintenance practices. The following lists the categories used:

  1. Class of data
  2. Supporting software
  3. Data type
  4. Data use
  5. Range of users
  6. Type of user
  7. Management practices
  8. Owner / Administrator
  9. Examples
  10. How it fits into the organization
