Anacostia River Walk, Washington, DC

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. (AMT) provided survey services for the new bike/pedestrian walk for the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative. Survey effort included topographic survey and mapping, property/boundary establishment, and as-built surveys of 1,200 acre project along the Anacostia River front. AMT also provided geometric design of 2.5 miles of trail design.

  • Aerial Topographic Survey: Performed aerial mapping of project site. Directed and coordinated the services of Air Survey Corporation to obtain and provide low level aerial photographs and mapping meeting the National Map Accuracy Standard for 1" = 20' scale mapping with 1-foot contours. Directed Air Survey Corporation to also obtain additional color photography to produce a digital orthographic photograph. As part of the aerial mapping QA / QC, "ground truthing" was performed randomly throughout the limits of topography to verify horizontal and vertical accuracies.
  • Supplemental Field Run Topographic Survey: Performed supplemental ground survey at bridge overpasses and at the CSX Railroad track crossing.
  • Storm Drain Survey: Obtained storm drain inverts, top elevations, pipe type, pipe sizes, and connectivity as directed by design engineers.
  • Property Lines: Performed research at the National Park Service and the DC Surveyor's Office to obtain property information and records. Prepared property mosaic of NPS property and DC Squares, street right-of-ways, and freeways immediately adjoining the river walk alignments.
  • Construction Bench Marks: Set elevation bench marks along proposed river walk alignment at 500-foot +/- intervals where permissible. Bench marks were established by utilizing RTK-GPS methods and meeting the National GPS standards for RTK-GPS vertical positional accuracy.
