NOAA Satellite Operations Facility, NSOF- Suitland, MD
The General Services Administration administered the design and construction of the new NOAA Satellite and Operations Facility in Suitland , Maryland . The new building is located on the grounds of the Suitland Federal Center at the intersection of Suitland Road and Silver Hill Road , in Suitland . The facility is approximately 208,000 gross square feet excluding parking and approximately 383,000 gross square feet inclusive of parking. The site area is approximately 15 acres. The project received LEED Silver Certification.
Specific services provided by A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. included the following:
- Field survey to supplement an aerial survey including utility invert elevations (of gravity sewers), valve covers and elevations.
- Development of Sediment and Erosion Control drawings for review by the State of Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) including incorporation of comments and resubmission for approval.
- Preparation of documentation required for stormwater management applications and low impact development design. Coordination of MDE approval.
- Development of the open space areas as a contractor staging area.
- Green roof design to capture rainwater and return a portion of it back to the atmosphere. Included a layer of plants and soil, a cup layer for collection and temporary storage of stormwater, and a synthetic liner to protect the top of the building from stormwater infiltration.
- Inclusion of site lighting in conjunction with the landscaping design.
- Provision of electrical duct bank, natural gas and communications ducts in conjunction with the MEP Engineers.
- Connection to sanitary and water system, permitting and coordination of plan review.
- Development of site plans to include roads, loading areas and grading plans which avoid development of inappropriate sites and minimize negative impacts to the environment.
