Pratt Street Streetscape, Baltimore, MD
The City of Baltimore conducted an evaluation of the conditions and the maintenance requirements of the plantings within the downtown and inner harbor area. The evaluation has determined that the landscaped areas, primarily composted of English Ivy with some daffodils, have become an extremely labor intensive area to keep maintained, free of weeds and pests and in a fully planted condition.
Extensive weed problems and rodent borrows and sub-vegetation runs were found in the English Ivy beds along the Light Street elevated median, along Pratt Street, Mckeldin Fountain elevated planting beds and the Euonymus shrub beds along the World Trade Center and National Aquarium sidewalks.
The project included the streetscape, landscape & irrigation plans and the renovation of the existing planting beds in the downtown and inner harbor area. The Mckeldin Fountain and adjacent Pratt Street planting bed in front of the Bell Atlantic building were the first to areas to be renovated. The ivy beds were removed and replanted with sod and will have areas of focal points with annuals, perennials and shrubs. The decision to replant the deteriorated ivy beds with sod areas was based upon; the maintenance effectiveness and costs, the desire to reduce the habitat for the rodent population and need to provide a more durable ground cover in these highly used public spaces.
The streetscape project included the plans, details, specifications and contract bid instructions for the following areas:
Charles Center Plaza, Fayette Street, North Side, Fayette Street Median, Hopkins Street Median, West Baltimore Street Median, Hopkins Plaza Courtard, South Charles Street, East Pratt Street, West Pratt Street, South Charles Street Median, South Paca Street, Conway Street, Light Street, Calvert Street, Commerce Street, South Gay Street, Key Highway and the Light Street Median in downtown Baltimore.
