UMUC Kim Engineering Building Plaza Landscaping
The new Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building is one of the most significant additions to the University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering in its more than 100 years of existence. The 160,000-square foot building includes a new clean room facility, as well as many state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. Major emphasis of the Kim Building include information technology, nanotechnology, bioengineering, microelectronics and MEMS, sensors and actuators, environmental engineering, intelligent transportation systems and space research.
A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. provided landscape design for the Kim Building on the University of Maryland, College Park Campus. The site was an existing parking lot that was currently under construction to become a new engineering building with an associated urban plaza to work with the existing campus master plan for that section of campus. Project specific tasks performed included the following:
Concept Development of the plaza & streetscape along the building including renderings & presentations to University of Maryland AEC, for features including: lighting, planting, grading, rain garden/bioretention to address stormwater management. Concept and preliminary plan development involved re-evaluating stormwater runoff and creating series of rain gardens that would demonstrate how new approaches to stormwater management can be aesthetically pleasing while working to filter water before entering the nearby Paint Branch. Sidewalks were proposed to be expanded off-site to include the paving patterns established for the building plaza area.
Final Site Features Construction Details including hardscape plaza pavement patterns, sidewalk details, tree pit details, bench details, paver setting details, rain garden/bioretention construction details, ornamental wall details.
Final Development Plans including team progress meeting once a week; cost estimates; specifications for planting, paving, concrete, soils, lawn; development of lighting plans; planting plans; organization of final construction documents; additional add-alternate plans to work with the budget including different hardscape features to reduce cost.
