Olde Towne Gaithersburg Streetscape Improvements
AMT prepared a comprehensive streetscape and utility undergrounding plans in order to improve vehicular and pedestrian movements within the city in terms of safety, aesthetics, and efficiency; improve needed parking capacity; provide a high quality and safe environment for residents, workers, and visitors to the city including improved signage, lighting and continuity; to provide retainment and enhancement of the history and historic features of the city; to provide schematic designs for pavement, curb, ramps, sidewalks, and intersections; to provide traffic calming features.
Scope of services included:

- Conduct a traffic study to determine capacity/level of services for roadways and existing parking; required widths of all streets within the project area; and the parameter for vehicle turning lanes; curb radii, traffic calming devices, and bus stop locations.
- Prepare a preliminary site analysis summary report with associated sketches depicting all of the critical design information. Major issues included continuity of pedestrian circulation; undefined on-street parking areas; potential for landscape and roadway improvements; identification of public parking areas; and external signage as a "gateway" to the Olde Towne area.
- Prepare concept plan, final plans, and construction documents for all major design elements including right-of-way, streetscape related items, and utility undergrounding.
- Obtain required permits from Maryland State Highway Administration; Montgomery County SCD; Montgomery County DOT; City of Gaithersburg permits (Forest Conservation)
Project goals included:
- Provide safe, continuous and attractive pedestrian circulation
- Provide safe and efficient vehicular circulation and traffic operations
- Provide for bus stops and additional on street parking spaces
- Minimize maintenance problems
- Provide a design that provides for and improves signage, lighting and continuity of landscape elements and furnishings
- Provide key entry signs and landscape plans to enhance the streets
- Provide schemes designs for pavement, curb, ramps, sidewalk materials and colors
- Provide traffic calming devices, maintenance and directional signage devices and directional signage to the Olde Towne Center
