WSSC PRV Replacements (Brightseat & Baltimore Avenue), Prince George's County, MD

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. designed the replacement of existing pressure reducing valves (PRV) at the Old Baltimore and Brightseat PRV Vaults with new PRV's with flow control features. In addition, AMT also upgraded the safety of the vaults and other operational features by modifying the vaults and replacing other equipment to substantially meet current guidelines. These changes included access and egress, working room configuration, and the use of plug valves in lieu of gate valves for isolation.

AMT assessed the condition of the existing vault structures, compared the existing conditions with the new standards, developed a brief letter report describing options and costs for brining each vault into substantial conformity with the current design guidelines (DG-03) and provided design services for the selected alternative. The Brightseat site vault inside dimensions are roughly 10.5 feet by 21.5 feet. There is also a 42 inch pipe splits prior to entering the vault into two parallel 30 inch lines. One of the lines is a 20 inch PRV valve and the other is a 30 inch plug valve. The Baltimore Avenue 42 inch pipe splits and combines prior to entering and leaving the vault into three parallel 24 inch lines. Two of the lines have 24 inch PRV valves with isolating gate valves on both sides. Two of the lines have 24 inch PRV valves with isolating gate valves on both sides.
