Clarksburg Water & Sewer System, Montgomery County, MD

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. provided planning and design for 8- and 16-inch water mains extension. Project investigations were performed to determine the accuracy and completeness of existing maps and drawings. Additionally, sewer extensions and a pump station were designed.

AMT designed one 350 linear ft. 60" tunnel under I-270 for a 16" water main and 8" sanitary sewer force main, and one 250 linear foot 60" tunnel under MD Route 121 for a 16" water main and 8" sanitary sewer force main. Air release valves were used for water mains and sanitary force mains, and thrust blocks we used to block the water main and sanitary force main. The firm also designed 3,000 feet of 8" water main on-site system, a 0.78 MGD pump station prepared under a Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U), and 8,000 feet of main line water and sewer extensions. Additionally, soil borings were taken to determine corrosion potential of soils. AMT coordinated with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and prepared forest conservation plans, wetland delineation, and E/S control plans for the main line extensions.

Unique features included:

  • Tunneling
  • Hydraulics and Capacity Analysis
  • Fire Protection Analysis
