Federal Triangle Flood Study, Washington DC

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. (AMT) is serving as the lead civil engineer in the ongoing study of the June 2006 flooding in the Federal Triangle for the General Services Administration (GSA). Work has included historic rainfall and flooding analysis of the DC area, field reconnaissance of flood damage (estimated at $40 million), coordination with DC WASA for sewer systems and capacity, alternatives analysis of flood mitigation solutions, milestone reporting and presentations throughout.

Coordination efforts include meetings and presentations with on-site building managers, GSA managers and support staff, and effected agencies including DC WASA, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Flood mitigation solutions being considered include sidewalk levees, a storm water pump station, building flood-proofing, and upgrades to the existing storm drain in Constitution Avenue. Solutions are being coordinated with levee modifications being planned in Potomac Park by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Baltimore District) at this time.
