On-Call Manual and Machine Traffic Counts, Statewide, Maryland

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. has conducted manual and machine traffic counts throughout the state of Maryland. Services have included preliminary site reconnaissance to determine location(s) for traffic count personnel or traffic machine count equipment and lane geometrics; traffic control measures required; number of traffic counters required; and potential site/traffic constraints. Manual Turning Movement, Manual Vehicle Classification, Machine Volume and Machine Vehicle Type Classification counts comprise approximately 90% of counting services. Other counts provided include special vehicle delay counts in conjunction with the manual turning movement counts. Portable machine counts are downloaded and analyzed using the TraxPro software. Machine counts are performed on state roadways, as well as, interstate ramps. Manual turning movement counts are downloaded and analyzed using the PETRA software. These counts performed at at-grade intersections, as well as, some interstate ramp intersections. The critical lane volume (CLV) analysis is utilized to determine AM and PM peak hour levels of service. Pedestrian data is also collected during traffic counts.

The various types of traffic data collection are important for traffic impact studies, safety studies, revenue studies, and travel forecasting, as well as, signal modifications and signal warrant studies. Traffic data collection is also useful for maintenance of traffic operations to determine the need and location of a detour and how many lanes would need to be maintained during construction along multi-lane roadway sections.
