highway design | US 50 Widening
US 50 Widening, Queen Anne's County, Maryland
AMT provided design services for a 3-mile section of US 50. These improvements are part of SHA's US 50 "Ocean Gateway" initiative B, a 7-phased project involving widening and access improvements along 7-miles of US 50. The improvements designed by AMT include roadway widening; new interchange and overpass construction; construction of a 12 mile access road providing access to residences, businesses and farming operations; a 50-space park-and-ride facility; right-of-way determinations; and preparation and standardization of the SWM Report for all 7 phases of the project.
Specific Project Elements include:
Geometry: AMT set or refined the alignment and profile for US 50, the service road, interchange ramps and MD 213 (1400 feet). The design has been developed in both INROADS and GEOPAK.
R/W Determinations: AMT performed drainage design, SWM and design alternatives for the 4- to 6-lane US 50 widening to establish R/W requirements. R/W determinations were also made for the service road, interchange and park-and-ride lot.
New Construction/Access Improvements: Designed a 2 mile 2-lane service road to "landlocked" community, upgraded existing community roadways and provided right-in/right-out interim access point and designed access road to accommodate farming operations.
Drainage and SWM: An H/H analyses was completed to determine SWM requirements. Developed the drainage area map and prepared and standardized the SWM report for AMT's roadway section. Additionally, AMT was responsible for reviewing, coordinating and assembling the overall SWM report for all phases of the project for submittal to MDE.
Intersection/Roundabout Design: AMT evaluated a SYNCHRO traffic analysis to determine the viability of constructing roundabouts at the intersections of the interchange ramps with MD 213. AMT designed the roundabouts in accordance with SHA and FHWA guidelines.
Maintenance of Traffic (MOT): AMT prepared MOT plans which were particularly complex at the US 50/ MD 213 Interchange and required a temporary roadway.
Project Continuity and Seamless Transition to Adjacent Design Sections: AMT participated in establishing an electronic filing system for storage and retrieval of drawings and design files. Bi-monthly team meetings were attended to ensure overall project coordination.
Community Outreach: AMT prepared design options for the service and presented the options to the community.
