Route 193 Widening, Prince George's County, Maryland

Winner of 2002 Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies.

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. (AMT) provided preliminary and final design for the widening of 7200 feet of Route 193 to increase traffic capacity and provide shared-use bike lanes.

Project components included:

Survey: Field shot survey to develop base maps for road widening design.

Road Widening/Bike Lane: Included over 7,200 feet of widening and improvements at five intersections. Widening at intersections accommodated the increased traffic volumes for turning vehicles. A bike lane was provided for the entire corridor by widening the shoulders. Also designed new geometrics, lighting and drainage facilities.

Signalization: Designed modifications to signals to control new lanes/traffic movements at the intersections. Coordinated the design with SHA.

Drainage: Designed modifications to drainage systems to accommodate the roadway widening including cross culverts.

Intersection Analysis: Prepared MOT plans to safely direct traffic through the construction zone and each of the three signalized intersections. Hours of construction were limited by stadium events and University schedule of classes.

Signing and Striping: AMT prepared striping plans for the widened portion of MD 193 to include the shoulder bike lane and followed MUTCD standards to stripe for bike lanes passing through intersections. Provided striping for pedestrian crossings at all signalized intersections.
