VDOT Design-Build Project for the Chantilly Area Headquarters and the Northern Virginia Traffic Field Operations Building
A Morton Thomas and Associates is providing the surveying, environmental permitting and civil engineering services for this ongoing VDOT design-build project on a fast-track schedule and working closely with the VDOT Central Office and Northern Virginia District in the process.
The project includes two separate sites, developed simultaneously, offsetting the schedules by 30 days to allow for better coordination and utilization of construction subcontractors. It has a duration of 620 days, and the contract value is approximately $19 Million. Environmental studies and an early release approval by VDOT of the rough grading and erosion control plans was accomplished in 100 days (TFO site) and 140 days (AHQ site) providing a successful first phase to the project. Final design plans are now being reviewed by VDOT and the Department of General Services (DGS - BCOM) as construction materials are being secured for the sites.
The NOVA TFO is a 6-acre maintenance facility that will include a car parking lot, truck/ large vehicle parking lot, and combination building that accommodates office space, electronics shop, warehouse areas, and equipment storage and maintenance bays. Site design also includes storm drainage, stormwater management basin, water main/ fire hydrants, sewer lateral, landscaping, and lighting.
The Chantilly AHQ is a 19-acre site which will include an administration building, combination building, 100 salt spreader storage racks, 30 tailgate racks, 2 chemical storage buildings, 2 liquid chemical storage tanks, a fuel station, a parking lot, and related site improvements. Site design also includes storm drainage, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, water main/fire hydrants, sewer main, landscaping and lighting.
The Chantilly AHQ improvements also include an approximately 2,000-foot extension of Murdock Street for Fairfax County and VDOT. Roadway work will include the paving, closed drainage system, lighting, sidewalks, water main extension, gas main extension and private utility coordination, as well as a 1,000-foot gravity sewer main design along a nearby easement to be coordinated with adjacent property owners.
