Smithsonian - Perimeter Security, Washington, DC

The project included the installation of Smithsonian Mall-wide perimeter security barriers and building upon the National Capital Urban Design and Security Plan completed in 2002. The Smithsonian Institution's Mall facilities are located on the National Mall in Washington, District of Columbia.

The facilities are bounded by Constitution Avenue to the north, Independence Avenue on the south, 4th Street to the east, and 14th Street to the west.

Smithsonian facilities included in this project are as follows:

  • National Museum of American History
  • National Museum of Natural History
  • National Air and Space Museum
  • Smithsonian Institution Building
  • Arts and Industries Building
  • Hirsshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
  • Smithsonian Quadrangle (including S. Dillon Ripley Center, National Museum of African Artand Arthur M. Sackler Gallery)

Among the comprehensive civil engineering services provided by A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. are:

  • Provided topographic survey and utility designating/mapping for the above mention building sites.

  • Researched and retrieved available site/civil related documents from Smithsonian, National Park Service, District of Columbia archives including topography, site plans, utilities (water, sewer, storm drainage, electric, gas, telephone).

  • Developed multiple design alternatives including site layout, grading, drainage, roadway, parking lot and vehicular accessibility impacts, loading dock impacts, utility impacts, fire suppression water supply protection, and environmental controls (storm water management).

  • Developed schematic documents including outline specifications and design narrative including for site layout, grading, drainage, roadway, parking lot and vehicular accessibility impacts, loading dock impacts, utility impacts, fire suppression water supply protection, and environmental controls (storm water management).

  • Provided coordination with the Smithsonian Institute, District of Columbia Department of Transportation, National Park Service, DC Department of Health (DC DOH), Watershed Protection Section, DC Water and Sewer Authority.

  • Provided final site layout and design for improvements, utility infrastructure, and grading within the project limits, including detail sheets for necessary typical site elements, including sidewalks, curb and gutter, driveways, etc.
