University of Maryland Football Practice Fields

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. (AMT) provided design services associated with the renovation/reconstruction of the three existing football practice fields (two natural turf fields and one artificial turf field) at the University of Maryland College Park. The existing artificial turf field was converted to natural turf, while one of the natural turf fields was converted to a synthetic turf as part of the reconstruction. The other natural turf field was also upgraded as part of the reconstruction. All three renovated fields have an integrated underdrain system to remove run-off from the playing surfaces. A trench drain system was constructed around the synthetic playing field to eliminate run-off from draining onto the practice surface. Each of the fields also had individual sports lighting. An irrigation system was also provided for the two natural turf fields. The two natural turf fields were designed to function in both an east-west and north-south direction to minimize the wear and tear of the natural turf.
